Description

Offered here is an opportunity to obtain a unique, rare, and one-of-a-kind
baseball collectible.
"Scroogie," was the product of
New York Mets
famed screwball pitcher Tug ( 'Ya Gotta Believe!' ) McGraw and nationally known illustrator Michael Witte. The comic strip ran nationally in 57 newspapers for just over two years, making this original piece of artwork extremely rare. Four originals from the "Scroogie" series now reside in Cooperstown,
NY, in the Baseball Hall of Fame . It is exceptionally rare when a piece becomes available commercially.
Tug McGraw, a member of the New York Mets Hall of
Fame (1993) and the Philadelphia Phillies Wall of Fame (1999), was a popular figure noted for his colorful on and off-the-field antics. He passed away in January of 2004.
For the strip's purposes, McGraw ("Scroogie") is surrounded by a fictional cast of characters playing for "The Pets",
and MLB legends such as Reggie Jackson, Mike Schmidt and Frank Robinson made occasional appearances. Self-deprecating references to blown saves, giving up long home runs and proving an utter failure at the art of contract negotiation were recurrent themes in the strip's run. The piece is approximately 9 1/2" X
21 1/2" on 140 lb. coldpress paper. It is in excellent condition, with the original artist's whiteout in the first frame caption. This piece appeared on April 6th, 1977,
and is one of the rare Reggie Jackson scripts.
