Description

E.T. Westbury described with his usual great attention to detail how to build a running model of a diesel powered Averling Road Roller.  This machine is a faithful representation of the real machine in miniature and the scaled down engine is water cooled and runs on gasoline and drives the pavement roller just like the big rig does!
Note: Westbury elected to modify the engine design for ease of building and to make the model trouble free.  It has a gasoline fueled engine, not diesel because a diesel engine would have increased the difficulty of building a working model.  This construction feature ran for about a year of Model Engineer magazines in 1938 and is composed of over 100 pages of text and drawings.  We have added some notes and comments and reference materials, photos, etc. which were not in the original published article.
On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being beginner level or least difficult, we rate this as a solid 6 difficulty level if you buy castings or a solid 8 if you elect to make your own castings.  We intend to offer castings for this model sometime later this year.   Our listing is for one set of paper reproductions of the entire magazine feature.  Due to the age and condition of the originals, these copies are not all perfect but they are use-able and it is quite possible for a reasonably advanced model engine builder to reproduce the entire machine using a lathe of at least 6" swing and a small milling machine and basic hand tools.
The design is well thought and explained in easy to follow installments,  I personally get a kick out of reading how differently machining procedures were described in 1938, especially from the British point of view and some of the names of parts are bound to get a raised eyebrow or chuckle out of even the most seasoned model builder!  Not to poke fun at those Limey Blokes, it is just that even now they do not speak the same English language that we do and some parts are identified with funny names or descriptive phrases.   In our photos, we are showing an example of one of these which was recently built in England and displayed at a model engineering event,
YOU ARE NOT buying a model or model kit, this listing is for a comb-bound book reproduction of the original magazine articles as they were published in 1938.   Check our other listings for more CD-ROM copies and full sized drawings sets of model engineering drawings books which are similar related model engines, model locomotives, shop tools and equipment.
