    Description

This great piece of Coral Gables history is a First Mortgage Bond of George E Merrick, the founder of Coral Gables in the amount of ,000.  It is from 1924, the beginning of what became Dade County’s premier residential and business cities.  It carries the signature of George E Merrick, and I cannot say if it is facsimile or hand signed by him.  It was a “Gold Bond” in that it states that it is payable in gold coin of the United States, or equivalent to the present standard and weight and fineness on the first day of July, A.D. 1928.  It was a coupon bond and two of the coupons are still attached.  According to the bond, this is one of a series of 500 which were issued in denominations of either 0 or ,000.  This is Bond Number 132 in the series.  The bond is being sold for its value as a collectible only as it cannot be redeemed and has no market value as a bond.  It is being sold only for collectors, not investors.
The City of Coral Gables, Fla was incorporated in 1925 as one of the first planned communities in the United States.  George Merrick was the developer of the city.  Coral Gables is also home to the University of Miami.
This Bond is in excellent condition.  It may have been lightly folded, but there are only very light and barely visible fold lines.  It will be shipped flat.  It measures approximately 10 x 15 inches.  It is printed on both sides.  This is a very hard to find item and one which is truly for the advanced collector.
All items are sold as is.
