L-19 BIRD DOG
.
This exact-scale Berkeley
L-19 BIRD DOG
model came out in 1960 while Pop was flying the real thing in the U.S. Army flight school flying for 7 months. This 1/2A, 36" span model is stable enough for rudder-only RC adaptation or even 2-channel RC (the exact scale elevator outlines are on the
PLAN)
. The reason for the flight stability is that the full-scale
Bird Dog
(which Pop flew in the U.S. Army for over 10 years) was what they called a "rudder airplane." That meant that the pilot could pick up a low wing to level flight with a touch of the rudder, no aileron movement was needed. It was difficult to land and had a tendency to ground loop, but in flight it was easy to fly.
As a long-time U. S. Army fixed wing and rotary wing aviator in the 1960s and 70s, the
L-19
was certainly one of Pop’s favorites. Their planes were painted as shown in the first picture, however, in flight school the solid orange dayglo paint scheme was used for safety. Just as the Navy's biplanes were painted bright yellow and called "Yellow Perils" to warn others that a student pilot was at the controls, the Army’s orange color scheme said the same thing. The orange
L-19
is shown on touchdown at a Ft. Rucker stage field. The plane had 45 degrees of flaps. When you dropped the full flaps you came down in about a 50 degree angle of descent. You can see those barn-door flaps on that orange
L-19
.
MY LAST PICTURE IS POP JUST IN FROM THE FLIGHT LINE IN 1960.
As a
BONUS
I include a large copy of a 1960 Scale Fidelity Sheet as well as a same size 3-View document. I also include a copy of an excellent article highlighting the L-19’s emergence as a military plane in 1949.
